OFFICIALLY WORDS

Rocket knows words!

- He makes the sign for "milk", and he uses it both for nursing and for cow milk
- He makes the sign for "more"
- Yesterday, he held up a book and said "buh"

Communication!!!

Hooray! The beginning of rational discourse!

Rational? Hee! He's a little kid. Prepare to hear stories of massive irrationality. Reason is for weaklings and non-toddlers. Bwa-ha-ha!

(I'm punchdrunk. I hate many things about inheriting this house; number one is the feeling that at every moment, there's home improvement nonsense I should be doing.)

So I realize. But hey, the first step! By the time Rocket has sentences, I'm betting Junebug is positively eloquent.

Go Junebug! I look forward to talking with him.

I would love to come over for dinner. That would be awesome! Is it a double date? Should I bring P.? He'd love to see you and he is wonderful with kids.

Best nights for the two of us are Tuesdays and Fridays. Best nights for me alone are Mondays and Wednesdays. Weekends are a mixed bag.

When my daughter learned the sign for milk (this might have been around 9 months old?), she started busting it out every time I walked into the room. So I would obligingly stick a boob in her mouth, but half the time she wasn't even interested in nursing. So I'm like, "Does she really know what the sign means if she's doing it when she's not hungry and doesn't want to nurse?" And my husband said, "Either she just wants to show off her new skills, or she thinks it's your name."

And that is how Milk became one of my nicknames.

(But once she learned spoken words, she loved to practice them over and over to anyone who would listen, so I think she was just proud of her new WORD.)

Words are the best. groovy!bb is getting way better at communicating what she wants, too. Life got a lot easier for both of us when I taught her a sign for "music" and promptly discovered that when she flops down next to my bag and fusses, which had been a mystery for some time, it is because she wants me to take my laptop out of the bag to play music for her. Accurate pseudonym is accurate.

(sports!bb, who is four years old and fully capable of communicating in sentences, has adopted this method of requesting music as well. It's pretty cute when the two of them start doing it together.)
