I really liked what you said, too - I think those points about checking our assumptions and the onus being on the assumer, not the other person, are important ones.
It worries me generally when people want to leave the female box, because then when they do anything that's one more thing a woman didn't do, in a world that's only too happy to provide examples that women can't do stuff.
Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaagh.
But externally, people are going to look at you and put you in categories and visible gender and skin colour are going to be right up there in how they do that because people are wired that way.
Christ. I do think there's racism and sexism and a shitload of prejudice pretty much in the very air we breathe because it's such a fucked-up society, but for Godsakes, it's not like how the swallows find their way to Capistrano, or whatever.
The thing is, I can sympathize with part of what Jo is saying. I often do feel a genuine sense of grief, loss, and (yes) rejection when an awesome female-appearing person comes out as trans or genderqueer. But those feelings are *my problem* to deal with. It's not fair for me to make them somebody else's problem, and I really try not to. (In service of which, I will drop the subject now.)

I think it's a little more like Barrayaran feminist talks to visitor from Beta Colony, though.

That is also a pretty amazing response by JW there, in the opposite non-awesome direction. Jesus.

I want to be elegantly scornful of both concept and phrasing but I'm just stuck with WHAT.
