why why why

Talked to my mom tonight.

Mom: "Remember to vote tomorrow!"
Me: "Oh, we already voted by mail."
Mom: "Oh. …..who did you vote for?"
Me: "Obama, of course."
Mom: "Oh. Really?"
Me: "Yes."
Mom: "Well, everybody here is very anxious about the election, but I was at [a friend]'s house last night and I told her not to worry. If Obama wins, he won't raise taxes on us, just on the rich people. And if Romney wins, he'll get us all lots of money."
Me: "Whaa. He'll do what now?"
Mom: "He'll make sure we all get lots of money."
Me: "No he won't."
Mom: "Yes, that's what he says he'll do."
Me: *cries on the inside*

And so Romney will take Texas.

....on the other hand, if your mom did vote for Obama, her vote might be trashed anyway! http://wonkette.com/488627/a-childrens-treasury-of-wacky-swing-state-voter-irregularities#idc-cover asldkfjasljdflkasjfld

::facepalm::

My oldest brother owns a restaurant. He's considering voting for Romney because someone told him Obamacare would cost all his profit. Sigh.

How the <series of expletives deleted> can you own and run a business and take an assertion like that on hearsay? FFS, call your tax guy or pull out an abacus and do the math yourself.

Well, the conversation was a couple of months ago: I'm hoping he did the research. Also, he lives in Chicago so it doesn't matter, Illinois will go for Obama.

But it's horrifying to think that he considers his profit margins more important than women's health (as a for instance). Not that I put it to him so bluntly: I was too astonished that he didn't actually know who he was going to vote for.

Hon, my brother is a proud Republican who went to a lecture last month on how evolution is a liberal lie. It happens in the best families. ;>

I am so glad I have no close family who would vote for Romney.

I envy you.

And whoever wins, I'm staying the hell away from Facebook for the rest of the week.

A fair point. Having classic liberal boomer parents, though, I can't imagine how it must feel on a personal level.

I mean, I am way further to the left than my folks, but still.

Yeah, I'm in the exact same position as you on this one. I can't claim that my parents and I have the same political views, not at all (and if we were all Canadian, we'd definitely vote differently), but at least we're not in separate universes.

Argh. I sympathize.

This is the one time every four years I wish I still lived in PA. That's a swing state, and it's full of my right-wing relatives. They vote.

While my SIL is awesome and rational, her family is old money Republican, and the sort that don't believe in climate change, say gay marriage is going 'too far', and don't see the problem with voter ID laws because if you can't manage simple documents, why should you be allowed to vote?

Family gatherings are few and there's just stuff we don't discuss. But yeah, all families have them.

At least she voted for Obama! I had a similar conversation w/ my parents but they voted Romney because they think they're rich enough to get a Romney tax cut. Aside from how utterly morally bankrupt that is, they're rich but not rich enough for a Romney tax cut, so it's also completely fucking stupid. >.

If Romney wins, I expect you to ask at regular intervals over the next four years whether her check has arrived yet.
