Junebug milestones

For my own personal memory:

He will be 1 year old this week.
He babbles all the time but has no words yet....we think.
But he understands more each day. I asked him to give me the ball and held my hand out - and he gave me the ball. We can play a rolling game where I roll him the ball and he hands it back to me. Or tries to roll it back to me, though his method of rolling is still to whack it into the floor so it doesn't go very far.
He pulls up on everything. He doesn't cruise, but if he's holding on to something that moves, like our stepladder, or a rolly chair, he will take a few steps behind it.
Only parents will truly understand why I am writing this down, but he is sometimes producing turds now! (As opposed to the lake of sewage. It is so much easier to clean up.)
We are in Texas visiting my friend J. who just had her second. He is 8 lbs. He is the tiniest, lightest, skinniest, furry adorable teeny little monkey. It is almost impossible to believe that my huge fat awesome baby was 3/4 that size when he was born. He's grown so much. How can it only have been a year.

ETA: more about the Junebug on the eve of his first birthday:

He eats all the things. Well, he would like to. We do not give him the sharp crunchy things because of the coughing and the choking, but he wants to eat them all. He will reach right past the nice baby-size piece of sausage or fruit you cut for him and grab the whole rest of the sausage. What he really wants is one piece of food in each hand that he can both cram into his mouth at the same time. And sometimes then take it out and drop it on his tray and stare at it then pick it up and eat it. Or, if you are unlucky, hand it to you.

He is timid of new situations and cries when he is scared. He is fascinated by dogs - when we are jogging and I hear tiny high-pitched hoots coming from the stroller I know a dog has hove into view somewhere. But he is not used to cats and cries when J's (elderly, harmless) cat walks by him. But I know that given a day or two he will get used to it and then want to play with it. He cried the first time we went by a fountain. The next time he was willing to dabble his fingers in it.

He climbs stairs and wants to climb me. He is less interested in nursing because everything else is so fascinating to look at and so hard to ignore.

He has become shyer of people, in a truly adorable way: he used to stare at people on the bus and then smile at them; now he stares at them, smiles at them, then is overcome and hides his face against me then looks back at them and grins. It is heart-meltingly cute.

He claps all the time. He can tell when we're getting to the bit in the patty-cake rhyme where I'm going to poke him in the belly and starts giggling in advance. He is just starting to enjoy being read to.

He is still a wonderfully chill baby; if he is cranky and fussy, we know he's tired or hungry or something else that needs to be addressed. He's being remarkably elastic about his schedule being messed with on this trip. I love him so much, my tiny guy. I would like to do something special for him to thank him for being so sweet but I am as nice as I can be to him every day. There is no more nice I can be.

Except that he is getting cake for his birthday.

Only parents will truly understand why I am writing this down...

I swear to god, if we'd known that that would be the consequence, we would probably have started her on an all-ground-beef diet at around three months.

...so it's probably better that we didn't, really.

Happy birthday to the Junebug.

I love baby updates. I read the ones from [personal profile] thefourthvine about her son, the Earthling, and am completely in love with him as a result.

Little humans are so cool! They're like those alien monsters in movies where, like, one little seed drops into a place and it starts growing and tearing things off the structures around it and getting bigger and bigger and self-assembling out of the components in reach, and soon you have this big mech monster thing that is stomping the city and it totally wasn't there before.

Humans are like that, only cute and you get to dress them in silly outfits to embarrass them later.

Congratulations on the first year!
