Google image search and my own memory has failed me. I had an idea for an artwork - but it feels suspiciously familiar. Is there a famous image that has a layout similar to this:

other than a common "loading" icon, of course?

It's going to be something embarrassingly obvious, isn't it. I am preemptively embarrassed.

I've seen knitting needle gauges like that. Some of them are decorative enough that one could wear them as jewelery. The different holes should be labelled in fine print on at least one side, unless the jewelery function is more important than the needle gauge function.

It looks a lot like a Japanese family crest (as seen on formal black kimono), which are often black and white designs. There are a lot of them at the bottom of the Wikipedia page (http://ja.wikipedia.org/wiki/家紋の一覧).

I think I've seen a graphic with that layout, with images of frog development or something like that....
